THE BORDER WALL IN LAREDO IS DEAD:
An epic David vs. Goliath Battle. The people of Laredo won!
On Friday, @DHSgov terminated two border wall contracts, totaling 31 river miles through Laredo proper from El Pico Rd. to the southern tip of Webb County.
In case y’all missed this great news yesterday 👇🏽 if they can cancel this one, they can cancel them all. And they should. #NotAnotherFoot https://t.co/ID1zUXiRiI
smart move, now do every last wall contract in the RGV and everywhere else. the 100+ condemnation suits still pending in court are 100% congressionally funded.
Also don't ask Congress for more virtual wall tech - take down the wall instead! https://t.co/deVQYZmAu7

By leaving the state, pro-voter lawmakers didn’t just stop Gov. Greg Abbott's anti-voter legislation. They also stopped dangerous proposals to ban medication abortion, attack trans kids, curtail Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion education, and force Texans into the cash bail system.
Texas lawmakers took bold action to defend democracy by leaving their families and risking arrest. We want to thank these pro-voter lawmakers & let them know we have their backs.

This is my hometown of La Feria, TX. Flooding like this happens ALL over the #RGV every damn year. Property damage, mosquito booms, damage to infrastructure, all happens ON THE REG - yet @GregAbbott_TX would rather build a racist wall than address the real issues in the State. https://t.co/tPOUePl8h8
This is TCRP's Outreach Coordinator, @RobertoAleLopez, and this is what his community lives through all the time.
If flooding like this happened around the Governor's Mansion, you bet that would have been item #1 on the Governor's legislative priorities list to address instead. https://t.co/ofdSysnb8D
🗳️ Border voters know how important it is to protect our fair and equal access to the polls.
Our voting rights expert @DanielDiaz956 breaks down why our Texas House reps WALKED OUT of the #txlege and flew to DC https://t.co/wfkNAXMeJX https://t.co/YfLjb8DoCP
Voters in border communities are no stranger to attacks on our access to the ballot box. Just like the rest of the U.S., people of color in the RGV have had to fight for fair and equal representation.

It is incredibly disrespectful to the hundreds of Texans who waited well into the night to testify, and to tell the committees how the bills would harm them personally, to suggest they don't know what they're talking about. #txlege #SuppressionSession
Two of our attorneys @jcslattery and @emilyebytx testified on #SB1 and #HB3 and they identified a number of specific provisions that would suppress voting in Texas.
You can see their testimony here:

We have read #SB1 & #HB3, @DanPatrick. So did the 100s of Texans who testified against them for hours last week.
It sounds like you haven't read what's in the bills, though. You can see our analysis here. #txlege

#BREAKING As of yesterday, Texas began transferring arrested immigrants into a state prison, per Abbott’s order.
This is TDCJ statement on it: https://t.co/UJxOeT49Dk
Governor Abbott is following a centuries long racist playbook: incarcerating and vilifying a people for power. He is on the wrong side of history and we will fight to stop it.
We need infrastructure NOT incarceration.
We need dignity NOT demonizing. https://t.co/5U07UhDyBt

This Friday, TCRP's REJ Legal Director, Laura Peña, is speaking at the New Ellis Island (NEI) Virtual Border Policy Summit hosted by the @BNHR, where border residents and experts will by joined by lawmakers to explore the challenges at the southern border.
Pretty packed here in Edinburg, second level is open but filling up. My usual beat is border militarization but the cause for dignity on the border is here, and in this sense is the same fight.

Last year Austin's City Council aimed to reimagine public safety by improving systemic treatment of vulnerable folx who would otherwise have been dealt with by police.
Now that work is at risk of being walked-back. TCRP joined 24 organizations in response
Title 42 disproportionately affects Black refugees & families w/ young children. Biden: it’s past time to end Trump's Title 42 & instead welcome people w/ dignity w/o the use of immigration detention.

Our attorneys have been doing both intake & litigation around Title 42 for years. Every human being has the right to be safe & to seek safety. But today, our asylum system criminalizes the most vulnerable & turns people back to danger. We need a system that lives up to our values https://t.co/m7TJiYukUA
Border deaths are not a rare occurrence. Every year hundreds (that we know of) die by falling, being killed by Border Patrol agents, or are killed by the system because they're forced into the elements. When we say border security, we mean death.

Today @elevatetete, @sarahcruzz12, and I captured this footage of construction in the #RGV. Army Corps is saying these are just “guardrails”, but we didn’t need this construction from the start, this looks like Bush-era levee wall.

THREAD: Today you should know, and say, the name Mary Ann Johnson.
Mary was a 65 year old Black woman arrested and jailed on June 17th 2021 for a Class B misdemeanor.
She was booked into @hidalgocounty jail.
Her bond was only $3,000.
She died three days later.
So, @SenBryanHughes just said that online voter registration is now allowed (partly) in Texas because the GOP is always looking for new ways to improve voting. Just to be clear -- the state was FORCED BY A COURT to do that. This was not legislation passed in Texas.
No, no, boo. That was us.
